If blood tests confirm low iron, your GP will discuss the treatment options appropriate for you. An infusion is one option a doctor may consider where oral iron is unsuitable, not tolerated or has not worked, or where iron needs to be replaced before surgery or during pregnancy where advised.

What is an iron infusion?

An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous drip. Whether an infusion or oral iron is appropriate depends on your blood test results, your symptoms and your medical history. Your GP will discuss which option is suitable for you.

At Metta Medical Centre, iron infusions are administered in a comfortable, supervised clinical setting. You’ll sit in a treatment chair while the infusion runs, and you’ll be monitored throughout and after the procedure.

Signs you may have low iron

• Ongoing fatigue or low energy that does not improve with rest
• Shortness of breath during everyday activity
• Pale skin, dizziness or frequent headaches
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Hair thinning, brittle nails, or restless legs at night

These symptoms have many possible causes, so a GP assessment and blood test are the first step.

How the process works

Step 1. Initial consultation

If you’re a new patient or haven’t been assessed recently, book an initial consultation with one of our GPs. Your doctor will review your symptoms, order blood tests to confirm iron deficiency, and discuss whether an iron infusion is right for you.

Step 2. Blood tests

Metta Medical has onsite pathology, so you can have your blood tests done the same day. We check ferritin, iron studies, haemoglobin, and other markers to confirm iron deficiency and rule out other causes of anaemia.

Step 3. Review and script

Once results are back, your GP reviews them, writes the referral and script for the iron product, and books you in for the infusion procedure.

Step 3b. Consent form

Once your infusion is booked, a consent form will be sent to you. Please complete the consent form before your appointment so you have a chance to read through the information and ask any questions before the procedure.

Step 4. The infusion

The infusion procedure itself takes 30 to 40 minutes. Please allow approximately one hour at the clinic including post-procedure recovery time and monitoring.

Step 5. Follow-up

We’ll arrange a follow-up blood test 4 to 6 weeks later to confirm your iron levels have responded to treatment.

Cost of iron infusion

The total cost of an iron infusion at Metta Medical includes the GP consultation fee, treatment room fee, blood tests (bulk billed where eligible), and the iron product itself which is a separate PBS-dispensed script.

Who is an iron infusion suitable for?

• Patients with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia confirmed by blood tests
• Those who can’t tolerate oral iron supplements due to nausea, constipation, or reflux
• Patients who haven’t responded to oral iron after 3 or more months
• Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy-related iron deficiency, or chronic blood loss
• Rapid iron correction before surgery, pregnancy, or medical treatment
• Conditions that affect iron absorption including coeliac disease, IBD, and bariatric surgery

Risks and side effects

Iron infusions are generally safe when administered in a supervised clinical setting. Common side effects are mild and short-lived: temporary metallic taste, headache or dizziness, muscle or joint aches, and injection site soreness. Rare but serious reactions include allergic responses, which is why we monitor you during and after the infusion. Our GPs are trained in managing reactions, and Metta Medical has resuscitation equipment on site.
