Our GPs use health assessments to identify risk factors early, create personalised care plans, and connect you with onsite allied health services including psychology, physiotherapy, and dietetics.

What health assessments do we offer?
45–49 Year Old Health Check
A once-off preventive health assessment for adults aged 45 to 49 who have at least one risk factor for chronic disease. Your GP reviews your lifestyle, family history, and current health, then builds a plan to prevent conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Bulk billed for eligible patients. Eligible every 12 months.
Over 75 Health Assessment
A comprehensive annual assessment for patients aged 75 and older. Your GP reviews physical health, mental wellbeing, medication use, mobility, and social support to create a preventive care plan. Bulk billed for eligible patients, annually.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Assessment (Item 715)
An annual, comprehensive health check available to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients of any age. Includes full health review, follow-up care plan, and referrals to allied health. Always bulk billed.
Heart Health Assessment
A dedicated cardiovascular risk assessment for patients aged 30 and over. Reviews blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, smoking, and family history to calculate your 5-year heart disease risk. Bulk billed. Eligible every 12 months.
DVA Comprehensive Medical Assessment
Available for Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold and White Card holders. Fully DVA-funded.
Health Assessment for People with Intellectual Disability
A dedicated annual health check for people with an intellectual disability, covering physical, behavioural, and developmental health.
Aged Care Resident Assessment
For residents of aged care facilities. Your GP can conduct this at the facility or in-clinic.
What happens during a health assessment?
A health assessment at Metta Medical typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. Your GP will:
- Review your medical history, past conditions, and family history
- Check current medications, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements
- Measure your vital signs including blood pressure, weight, BMI, and waist circumference
- Discuss lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, smoking, and alcohol
- Assess mental wellbeing, mood, and cognitive function where appropriate
- Arrange blood tests, ECG, or imaging if indicated
- Create a personalised care plan with recommended follow-up and referrals

How to prepare
- Bring your Medicare card and any pension or concession card
- Bring a list of your current medications including dose and frequency
- Fasting blood tests may be required beforehand — we’ll advise when booking
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows blood pressure measurement
- Allow 30 to 60 minutes for the appointment

Are health assessments at Metta Medical bulk billed?
Yes. Eligible Medicare health assessments — including the 45 to 49 Health Check, Over 75 Assessment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Assessment (Item 715), Heart Health Assessment, DVA assessments, and Intellectual Disability assessments — are bulk billed at Metta Medical Centre. You pay nothing out of pocket.
Do I need a referral for a health assessment?
No. You don’t need a referral. Just book an appointment with any GP at Metta Medical Centre and let reception know you’re booking for a health assessment.
How long does a health assessment take?
Most health assessments take 30 to 60 minutes. Over 75 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander assessments tend to be longer because they’re more comprehensive. Book a long appointment to give yourself enough time.
Do I need to fast before a health assessment?
Some assessments — especially the 45 to 49 Health Check — may include fasting blood tests for cholesterol and diabetes screening. If fasting is needed, reception will let you know when you book. You can drink water but no food for 10 to 12 hours before.
Can I get an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Assessment at Metta Medical?
Yes. Dr Khin Kyaw has a special interest in Aboriginal health, and all GPs at Metta Medical can perform the Item 715 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Assessment. It’s available annually for patients of all ages and is always bulk billed.
What is the difference between a health assessment and a regular check-up?
A health assessment is a structured, Medicare-funded comprehensive review for specific patient groups such as those aged 75 and over, or 45 to 49. A regular check-up is a shorter, general consultation where your GP addresses specific concerns. Health assessments are longer, more thorough, and usually bulk billed when you’re eligible.
How often can I get a health assessment?
Most Medicare health assessments are eligible every 12 months. The 45 to 49 Health Check is a once-off assessment. Your GP will let you know when you’re next due.
Can my GP do a health assessment at a nursing home or aged care facility?
